Location & History:Tonyrefail
The Rhondda has two valleys, the Rhondda Fach (means “small Rhondda”) and the Rhondda Fawr (“big Rhondda”). Tonyrefail is the only one of the 34 villages to lie outside the old borough perimeter, lying in the far south west of Rhondda. As such, it is a key gateway into the Valley.
There is a by-pass road providing a fast road link, which joins Rhondda to the motorway network. The close proximity to the motorway has seen Tonyrefail become a commuter belt for Cardiff and many housing estates developed around the village. The village has several small shops but most people travel to Talbot Green (4 miles) to do main shopping. There are Banks, G.P.Surgeries, and a Nursing Home.
There are three primary schools (7-11) in and around Tonyrefail and all but the Welsh school feed into Tonyrefail Comprehensive School (11-18) which is one of the six Comprehensive Schools in Rhondda. G.P. at present there is not Sporting Marvel Worker in either the English or Welsh medium Comprehensive Schools. There is also a local community Centre that caters for leisure and other interest facilities, a Workmens Club for the older person.
In years gone by, Tonyrefail had many collieries and coal dominated the village. Like everywhere else in Rhondda, There is no industry within the village so is really a dormitory for Llantrisant and Cardiff
Tonyrefail was massively touched by the Great Welsh Revival 1904/06. There are four churches in the village one of which is growing rapidly through community outreaches.
