During the first week of Easter, we held the Sporting Marvels, Rhondda equivalent of the Olympic Games! Pitched at the children participating in the Mighty Marvels junior school programme, the event was split into two regional Olympics.

Musical Marvels continues to move steadily forward with Rachel and Dan highly valued by the Music Departments at both Ferndale and Porth County. “The feedback is very positive”, Steve Bowden, headteacher at Porth County, told us. “Rachel and Dan are having a very positive influence on our students. They get fully involved in music and performing arts lessons. They are totally enthusiastic!”

Mighty Marvel, Lotan Matewere from Malawi, is the first Marvel to be caught up in our problems with the UK Border Agency and our failure to secure the required Sponsor License. A quick overview of the background.

As part of the Easter programme, the Sporting Marvels team went off to West Wales for some camping. Tenby is one of the world’s most beautiful places and it’s a truly great place to camp . . . in August!! But the guys didn’t let this fact stop them from heading off, although if they’d had a choice, they may have decided to keep warm at home!

Anagor & Anderson may not roll off the tongue the way Morecambe & Wise or Torville & Dean might, but it’s not stopping Ugo and Sarah (right), our full-time workers at Treorchy Comprehensive School, building a reputation as something of a dynamic double-act.

Over the last five years, the All Star programme has grown steadily, to a point where it’s now an established part of school life at our four partner comprehensive schools. Aimed at influencing the influencers - the peer group leaders - the initiative sees the All-Star develop year-on-year for a possible seven years in the system: Year 7 - All Stars, Years 8 & 9 - All Star Academy and Years 10-13 - All Star Leadership Academy where the focus shifts to helping the “influencers” develop the skills and qualities of a leader.

The end of March sees Rhian Adams, our Trainee Marvel from Aberdare “celebrate” three months with Sporting Marvels.
|
 Angelo arrived from Cape Town, South Africa, during the Whitsun school holidays last year. “It’s amazing how quickly ten months can fly by!” he said. “I’m having a great time and really enjoying my role. I’m learning every day and it’s a very real privilege to serve Sporting Marvels and through them, the children of the Rhondda”. |
